ChatGPT search volume is said to be one-fifth of Google's: the counting method is the point

ChatGPT's search-like query volume is now roughly one-fifth of Google's. That is OpenAI's own claim. On 2 November 2026, Adam Fry, who leads ChatGPT's consumer product, gave the figure to journalist Alex Kantrowitz at an event in New York, and the interview was published on 3 November in Big Technology. On the same occasion he said ChatGPT had reached 1.2 billion weekly users, up about 200 million in two months; voice features had 250 million weekly users, and the Chat and Work experiences are planned to be merged into one.

The counting method is what matters. Fry's definition is that every question that triggers a web search counts as one search, so a single conversation can count several times. OpenAI has not published the underlying data, the time period or the method, nor said where its Google figure came from. One-fifth is therefore not a market share, and it cannot be read as one-fifth of Google's traffic having moved to ChatGPT.

Independent estimates are much lower. Search-data company seoClarity estimated in October 2026 that ChatGPT's daily search activity was about 7.5% of Google's; Ahrefs estimated about 12% in February 2026. On Ahrefs' figures from the same period, Google accounts for nearly 40% of referral traffic to websites and ChatGPT for 0.21%, so Google sends about 190 times as many visitors. Google is not standing still either: in its late-October earnings call it said search query growth was the fastest in five years.

The direction is real; the number needs discounting. That more and more questions go to a chatbot first is not in dispute, but 20% is the upper bound under OpenAI's broadest counting, with third-party estimates at less than half of it. For website operators, Google remains by far the largest source of traffic, and ChatGPT a growing second entry point — not yet an equal rival.
