Google AI Mode's Monetization Squeeze: Search Growth Slows, Ads Push Overseas

Google's difficulty making money from AI Mode was stated plainly on Alphabet's third-quarter earnings call, disclosed on October 29. Google Search revenue was about $63.2 billion, up 12% year over year, slower than 17% in the second quarter and 19% in the first; chief business officer Philipp Schindler attributed part of the slowdown to lower monetization in AI Mode. In the same quarter, search query volume grew at its fastest year-over-year rate in five years, and Alphabet shares fell by about 10% at one point in after-hours trading.

More queries, slower monetization

AI Mode queries are on average three times longer than traditional searches, and about one in five involves voice, images or documents. Schindler's argument is that such queries mostly sit upstream in purchase decisions, bring new commercial intent, and are largely incremental, so they should create more monetization opportunities over time. The immediate problem is equally clear: users spend longer inside answers, while the path to clicking an ad gets shorter. Alphabet's quarterly revenue was $127.6 billion, up 25%, capital expenditure reached $51.4 billion, and net income was about $26.2 billion, below $35 billion a year earlier, which sharpens the pressure to earn.

Advertising is filling the gap

Google's response is to put ads inside the answers: ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode are being extended to more international markets, and the United States is also getting ad formats inside multi-turn conversations. Google says click-through rates for sponsored product listings in AI Mode are already comparable with organic results, and user research finds the ads relevant. For Google, this is the most direct way to turn heavy use into revenue; for users, the most visible near-term change is more clearly labelled sponsored content beside AI answers, so the credibility of those answers will depend more on how clearly ads are separated from content.
