Data Visualization Prompt: Paste Your Data and Let AI Pick the Right Chart and Write the Plotting Code

AI prompts • Admin • • 11 views

A data visualization prompt is one complete instruction for an AI: paste your table data, say what you want to show, and the AI picks the most suitable chart type, gives you plotting code that runs as-is, and explains why it chose that chart. It fits anyone preparing a report, a figure for a paper, or an operations review: no chart theory to learn first, no agonizing over dozens of chart types — copy the prompt, swap in your data, and you get a chart.

Copy this prompt and use it right away

You are a data visualization expert. Based on the data and goal I provide, complete one visualization.

Data:
[Paste your table data or CSV, keeping headers and units]

What I want to show:
[Write your core conclusion in one sentence, e.g.: Sales grew over the past 6 months, but September saw an unusual drop]

Readers and use case:
[For management reporting / a figure in a paper / an operations review — say who will read it]

Requirements:
1. Recommend only one chart type, and explain why it fits this data better than the alternatives
2. Give complete, runnable Python (matplotlib) plotting code using the exact numbers I pasted
3. Point out the 2-3 key numbers that must be labelled on the chart
4. If the data does not suit a chart, say so directly instead of forcing one

Swap the three bracketed parts for your own details

The square brackets mark the variables — replace them with your own details before using the prompt. Paste the raw table for the data, not just the conclusion: without the original numbers, the AI cannot choose a chart. State a conclusion for what you want to show, not just "draw me a chart", so the AI picks the chart to match the conclusion. The readers and use case decide how detailed the chart should be: for management, highlight the conclusion; for a paper, note the units and sources. After the chart comes back, keep asking: "What information would a line chart lose?" or "Switch the palette to a dark scheme that works on a projector." If the code the AI gives you fails to run, paste the error message back and ask it to fix only those lines instead of rewriting the whole script.

Check three things before putting it in your report

This prompt only makes a single static chart — do not use it for live dashboards or interactive boards. Before using the chart, check three things: first, verify that the numbers in the AI's code match the data you pasted, because the AI sometimes copies a value wrong; second, confirm the chart type matches the data — line charts for time series, bar charts for shares, histograms for distributions, and split mixed data before plotting; third, strip sensitive details from internal company data, removing client names and real amounts before pasting. If the data is only two or three numbers, skip the chart — a one-sentence conclusion says it better. Before you start, you can also read the spreadsheet analysis prompt to work out the trends and anomalies first, then decide what to draw.
