The source code hasn't actually appeared yet
As of the time of inquiry, the MiniMax-AI/minimax-code repository still only has README, bilingual and Chinese documentation, and issue configuration, showing a total of 8 commits. It is still positioned as the MiniMax Code desktop issue feedback portal, and the full client source code has not yet been seen.
In other words, the more accurate current expression is "declaring open source" rather than "already open source." Only if subsequent code, licenses, and build methods are uploaded gradually can developers further assess the degree of openness.
MiniMax is opening up the Agent technology stack
MiniMax Code did not suddenly shift to an open route. MiniMax Code 2.0, released in August, has been refactored based on the open-source Pi Agent framework, focusing on improving session state, tool calls, and long task stability.
MiniMax recently launched an independent MiniMax-Code-Plugins repository, opening up the Skills and MCP Server plugin contribution mechanisms, and using the Apache-2.0 license to manage warehouse tools and documentation.
AI programming competition shifts to the Agent foundation
The competition for AI programming products is shifting from "who generates stronger code" to "who can more stably combine models, tools, terminals, file systems, and multi-agent scheduling." MiniMax Code supports local project operations and Agent team collaboration. After open-sourcing, if the core execution layer is also released, its value will go beyond just adding a code assistant but providing a re-developable Agent engineering foundation.
What truly determines the impact of this open source release is not the announcement itself, but the scope of the code released afterward, the license, and whether the community can independently build and modify MiniMax Code. The upcoming changes in the source code repository are more worth watching than the release slogans.
