AI Weather Forecasting
AI weather forecasting tracks how large models predict typhoons, rainstorms and global weather: what systems like Fengqing and Pangu already do in operations, and how their verified scores compare with conventional numerical models.
Forecasting used to mean supercomputers solving physics equations. A second route has emerged: feed decades of observations and reanalysis data to a large model and let it learn how weather evolves. Systems such as Fengqing, Pangu and GraphCast now run in operational or near-operational service, producing global forecasts in minutes. The hard test is extreme weather: typhoon intensity and rainstorm placement still need case-by-case checks.
