Reddit shifts to a logged-in-first experience as AI search drains its traffic

On its third-quarter earnings call on October 29, 2026, Reddit said it would move to a primarily logged-in experience. The decision points directly at how AI search is changing traffic: Reddit said search referrals fell by more than one million per week on average in October, and if that pace continues, fourth-quarter daily actives could fall by a low-double-digit percentage from a base of 130 million.

Testing outside the US first, with no global timetable

Reddit said the logged-in-first experience would be tested first in selected markets outside the United States, with no timetable for a global rollout. The company gave three reasons: limiting AI scraping, preserving room to negotiate data-licensing deals, and gaining more logged-in signals for ad targeting. Logged-in and app users already account for the vast majority of engagement and more than 80% of monetization, so Reddit is clearly shifting its focus from being found to keeping people around.

Revenue is still growing; the traffic mix changed first

In the third quarter, Reddit had 130.3 million global daily active uniques, flat quarter over quarter and up 12% year over year. US daily actives fell to 50.7 million, down from 53.2 million in the second quarter and down 2% year over year, while international daily actives grew 24% to 79.6 million. Revenue reached $895 million, up 53% year over year, net income was $283 million, and advertising revenue was $847 million, up 54%. The headline numbers look strong, but the problem sits in the traffic mix: logged-out web visits depend most on search referrals and were hit first.

The cost of open browsing is being repriced

For ordinary readers, the change means that clicking through from search to a Reddit post will more often meet a login prompt first. For other sites and publishers, Reddit's move is a signal: when AI search answers the question directly and the click never comes back, open content becomes an asset that has to be protected with accounts and licenses. Reddit is betting that logged-in users are worth more, but if daily actives fall further than expected as testing expands, the cost of that bet will show up in the next earnings report.
