Anthropic Expands GSA Partnership: Claude at 40% Off for Governments at Every Level

Anthropic has cut the price of Claude for the US government by 40%. On 27 October 2026, Anthropic announced in an official news post that it had expanded its OneGov agreement with the US General Services Administration (GSA): government buyers now get a 40% discount on Claude Enterprise, Claude for Government and the Claude API, applying across every product surface for the first time. The discount takes effect immediately for direct purchases and will reach purchases through cloud providers in the coming months, and eligibility extends for the first time from federal agencies to state, local, tribal and territorial governments.

The terms first: pay for what you use, with no minimum spend

The agreement is consumption-based: agencies pay only for what they use, with no minimum spending commitment. Purchases run through GSA's Multiple Award Schedule, and are also available through resellers and major cloud platforms. Anthropic says the discount is estimated to save the government $1 billion — its own estimate. On security and compliance, Claude for Government is authorized at FedRAMP High and can handle sensitive unclassified work; select models also carry US Department of Defense IL4 and IL5 authorizations on AWS GovCloud, while Claude Enterprise is working through FedRAMP Moderate authorization.

What governments are already doing with it

Anthropic's announcement lists several government use cases: Utah gave Claude Code to 34 developers across 10 state agencies, and by the end of a four-week pilot 80% had a working environment within 30 minutes and 71% reported saving 20 or more hours; a state chief information officer's team used Claude to respond to a ransomware attack in 8 minutes, compared with the usual two to three days. Anthropic also says about 500 US federal, state and local government organizations now use Claude, weekly active users of Claude for Government are up about eightfold since February, and usage across federal civilian agencies has grown about 20-fold in a year — all company figures, not independently verified.

In a same-day announcement, GSA said its OneGov strategy has saved the federal government more than $1.8 billion since its inception, including about $1.6 billion through its super-intelligence agreements. Read together, the real intent of this price cut is not a one-off procurement saving but a push to move government buying from negotiating a price and buying outright toward paying for what is used: lowering the threshold is what lets state and local governments in. Whether the discount turns into sustained use will depend on whether pricing stays consistent once the cloud channels go live, and whether agencies get the deployment help and training to go with it — Anthropic says a dedicated implementation programme for government will start in the coming weeks.
