Google TPUs Land on Oracle Cloud in 2027, Giving Buyers a Choice Beyond Nvidia

Google TPUs will arrive on Oracle Cloud in 2027. On October 27, 2026, Oracle and Google announced at Oracle AI World in Las Vegas that Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) will be available through Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), making Oracle the first hyperscale cloud provider outside Google to offer Google TPUs. Oracle will provide the power, cooling, and data-center networking needed for deployment, while Google TPUs join Oracle's AI compute portfolio so customers can choose hardware by workload.

How the Eighth-Generation TPUs Divide the Work

According to the announcement, the eighth-generation TPUs come in two architectures: TPU 8t for model training and TPU 8i for inference. The announcement says TPU 8t delivers nearly three times the compute performance per pod of the previous generation and can cut frontier-model development cycles from months to weeks, while TPU 8i is built for the repeated inference work of many specialized agents. Together they cover large-model training, post-training, and production inference for reasoning, agentic, and long-context applications, including dense and mixture-of-experts models. The nearly threefold figure is a vendor claim measured per pod, not a guaranteed speedup for any specific application.

Customers Gain a Way to Compare Prices

For companies renting compute, the change is not the chip itself but the choice. With different architectures in the same cloud, customers can pick hardware for each workload based on performance, throughput, and cost instead of signing up with another cloud just to use a particular chip. The announcement also stresses near-linear scalability and optimized economics, but it discloses no prices, and the service will only launch in 2027 and ramp over several years, so how much anyone actually saves will only be clear from real pricing and measurements.

TPUs Are Moving Out of Google's Walled Garden

This matters because Google TPUs were previously available only in Google's own cloud. This year Google began selling TPUs directly to some customers, and now, through Oracle, they are entering a third-party cloud, turning in-house silicon from a competitive moat into a product for sale. At the same time, Oracle is expanding its work with Nvidia, planning to scale Vera Rubin systems to multi-gigawatt capacity and bringing in hardware from Cerebras and other vendors, so Nvidia is not being replaced. There is also a new signal on the demand side: Reuters reported on October 28, 2026 that The Information, citing a person familiar with the matter, said OpenAI plans to buy Google chips, but no deal terms were disclosed and neither company confirmed the report, so it should not be treated as settled fact. The real test comes in 2027: whether Oracle can deliver enough TPU capacity, software support, and competitive pricing on time will decide whether the choice promised in the announcement actually materializes.
