Claude Moves Into Google Workspace: Edit Docs, Sheets and Slides From a Sidebar

AI information • Admin • • 3 views

Claude officially moved into Google's office suite on October 6, 2026: Anthropic announced that Claude for Google Workspace has entered public beta, and paid users who install the add-on once can open a Claude sidebar directly inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, instead of copying text back and forth into a chat window.

One install covers all three apps

The sidebar can read the file currently open and see the paragraphs, cells or slides the user has selected. In Docs it can fix sentences, restyle headings and turn scattered next steps into a table, while leaving the existing formatting intact. In Sheets it can write formulas, build pivot tables and native charts, and add new tabs; when data needs cleaning or merging, it can process it with Python and write the results back into the sheet. In Slides it creates new slides using the deck's existing layouts and themes, and checks for overlapping elements, content spilling off the slide and text that is hard to read. Edits default to asking first: larger changes appear as suggestion cards that users accept or dismiss one by one, or users can switch to accepting all edits and let it finish in one pass.

Working on Google files from the chat window

Also launched the same day are connectors for Docs, Sheets and Slides: paste a file link into a Claude conversation and it can create or edit the corresponding Google file directly. Access follows Google's existing sharing settings — a file a user could not open stays closed to Claude as well. Enterprise controls already in place, including the Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys and OpenTelemetry audit export, carry over to the add-on, so administrators do not need a separate permission track for AI.

Why this move is worth watching

Gemini is built into Google Workspace; this is Google's home turf. This time Claude is not just reading files from the outside through connectors — it has put its entry point inside the document page itself, contesting office work on a rival's home ground. For teams already using Claude, whether the add-on is worth installing comes down to two things: whether the confirm-before-edit flow makes it safe to hand over real files, and how reliably it handles complex spreadsheets and long documents. The public beta is available on all paid Claude plans through the Google Workspace Marketplace, and Team and Enterprise owners need to enable the connectors first.
