ChatGPT Visual Ads Start US Testing This Month: Products Appear Beside Image Generation

AI information • Admin • • 9 views

ChatGPT visual ads are a new ad format OpenAI announced on October 5, 2026: testing begins later this month in the United States, placed inside the image generation flow. The ads are image-based, showing product inspiration, use cases, or experiences. OpenAI stresses they will be clearly labeled, kept separate from the image being created, and will not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.

Why image generation gets the first visual slot

OpenAI says ChatGPT reaches about 1.2 billion people each week. Ads already launched earlier this year on the free and low-cost tiers; the visual format moves placements from the bottom of answers into a moment with clear waiting time and focused attention, the seconds while an image renders. For advertisers, the slot sells context, not just impressions. The first round involves only a small group of advertisers in the US, a clear test-before-scaling step.

Measurement and brand safety arrive in the same announcement

Most of the announcement is actually about the ad back end. Conversion data integrations add Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp, attribution partners include AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, and Kochava, and OpenAI is working with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic on geo-based incrementality experiments. For brand suitability, pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science are in development, with an explicit note that these partners get no access to private user conversations, and ads are blocked from emotionally vulnerable or sensitive conversations.

The boundary worth watching

OpenAI's promise is plain: advertising does not influence answers, and advertisers cannot shape rankings. The other boundary matters just as much: ads appear only on free and low-cost tiers, while paid tiers stay ad-free, so the experience gap itself becomes a lever for subscriptions. Three checks will show whether this test is mature: whether labels stay obvious on mobile, whether the separation between generated images and ads holds in every interface, and whether measurement partners receive only the limited data promised. If you see a labeled product image while generating a picture this month, the test has reached you.
