Gemini Free Users Get Flash-Lite Only From October 9, and Plus Loses Pro Too

Gemini free users are about to get a smaller choice of models. In a Gemini Apps help page titled "Changes to Gemini model access and limits," updated in October 2026, Google states that from October 9, 2026, personal-account users without any Google AI plan will only be able to use Flash-Lite in Gemini on the web and in the app. The standard Flash model and Pro will no longer be open to the free tier.

The four plans, redrawn

The change tightens access plan by plan. Once it takes effect, model availability looks like this:

  • No plan: Flash-Lite only; neither Flash nor Pro is available.
  • AI Plus: keeps Flash-Lite and Flash, loses Pro.
  • AI Pro: keeps Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro.
  • AI Ultra: keeps all three models.

There is no single date for AI Plus subscribers; Google says it will email each of them with the date the change takes effect for their account. The two higher tiers are not only about restrictions, either: AI Pro gains the Deep Think option that used to be exclusive to AI Ultra, moving the strongest reasoning mode one tier down while keeping it behind the paywall. Rolling out alongside the model changes is a new effort setting for every model, with low, medium, and high levels. A higher effort level produces more thorough answers but also uses more of your usage limit.

What the free tier actually loses

In Google's own positioning, Flash-Lite is the lightweight, speed-first model suited to everyday tasks such as summarization and brainstorming; Flash balances speed and reasoning; and Pro is the most capable tier, handling complex math, coding, and long reasoning chains. After October 9, using Gemini for hard problems and deep analysis without paying becomes much more limited. The free tier turns into an entry point that keeps daily questions and answers, while the heavy work moves wholesale into paid plans.

This does not come out of nowhere. Since May 2026, Gemini has used compute-based usage limits that refresh every five hours alongside a weekly cap, with Plus, Pro, and Ultra offering two times, four times, and higher multiples of the standard allowance. On September 30, 2026, the Gemini 4 Argon launch likewise went first to safety partners and paying users. Put together, the direction is consistent: new capabilities and stronger models concentrate in the paid tiers first, and the free tier exists to get people started.

What free users should do now

Nothing needs to be done before October 9; the model picker will simply offer fewer choices. What deserves thought is dependence. If you have been using Pro for free as part of a fixed routine, such as long-document analysis or coding work, plan your fallback now: within Google's lineup, AI Pro is the lowest tier that still includes Pro, and AI Plus alone will not get it back. If your use is everyday questions and summaries, Flash-Lite will most likely be enough and there is no rush to pay. AI Plus subscribers should watch for Google's email, confirm their own effective date, and only then decide whether upgrading is worth it. Note that the help page covers personal accounts only; work and school accounts are outside the scope of this announcement.
