SpaceX Hands Colossus 1 Compute to Anthropic: 300 MW to Ease Claude's Limits First

SpaceX Hands Colossus 1 Compute to Anthropic: 300 MW to Ease Claude's Limits First

On November 4, 2026, Anthropic and SpaceX struck a compute deal: Anthropic will use the full computing power of SpaceX's Colossus 1 data center in Memphis, Tennessee. The facility houses more than 220,000 Nvidia chips and will give Anthropic 300 megawatts of new capacity within a month — enough electricity for more than 300,000 homes. The deal directly eases Claude's compute bottleneck, and Anthropic immediately doubled rate limits on paid Claude Code plans and removed peak-hour usage caps for Pro and Max accounts.

Why Musk is renting to a rival

The most intriguing layer of this deal is who signed it. Musk co-founded OpenAI and is now suing it for abandoning its nonprofit mission — yet he is renting compute to OpenAI's competitor. Writing on X, he said he made the decision after spending time with Anthropic's leaders last week, and that their work to ensure Claude is “good for humanity” impressed him: “No one set off my evil detector,” he wrote. For SpaceX, which is preparing an IPO, Anthropic is also a marquee customer.

What users get right away

For Claude users, the change is immediate: rate limits on paid Claude Code plans double, Pro and Max accounts are no longer bound by peak-hour usage caps, and developers can make far more requests to Claude Opus models. On the same day, Anthropic also launched a research preview of “dreaming,” a new Claude feature that lets agents review work between sessions, spot patterns, and update files that store user preferences. How long the extra 300 megawatts will last, though, depends on how fast Claude's user base keeps growing — Anthropic has already locked in a long-term compute bill of nearly $900 billion, and the compute race is far from over.

The deal also leaves a more distant question open: both sides said they are interested in working together on multi-gigawatt space-based data centers, a long-standing Musk goal and a major selling point for SpaceX's IPO. But space data centers are extremely expensive and technically daunting, so for now that remains an intention. The more practical question is whether Anthropic can keep its promise of looser limits now that it has all of Colossus 1.
