ChatGPT and Codex to share one usage allowance from December: heavy coding leaves less for chat

ChatGPT and Codex to share one usage allowance from December: heavy coding leaves less for chat

ChatGPT and Codex will draw on a single usage allowance from December. In guidance updated on October 31, 2026, OpenAI's Help Center states that the usage allowance for Plus, Pro, and Business subscriptions will be shared across ChatGPT and Codex, because the agentic capabilities of ChatGPT Work are being brought into the main ChatGPT experience. For people who use both chat and coding, spending on the two sides will be recorded in one account for the first time.

The way usage is measured is being unified as well. The Help Center says usage for ChatGPT and Codex will be measured in tokens, and more advanced models and more complex tasks will generally use more of the allowance, while instant chat will not draw from it. Combined remaining usage and reset times will be visible on the Usage page in Settings. When the allowance runs out, users can wait for it to reset, upgrade their plan, or buy credits to continue using eligible features. OpenAI expects that most users will not need to wait for a reset more often than they do now.

An afternoon of coding could eat into the evening's chat allowance

The practical effect shows up in how each day's allowance is divided. Agentic coding tasks often consume a large number of tokens in a single run, so a heavy afternoon can leave too little for asking ChatGPT questions in the evening, and the reverse is true as well. Until now the two sides were accounted for separately, so users did not have to choose between chatting and coding. From December, heavier tasks will need to be placed deliberately on one side or the other. People who switch between the two products regularly should already check the Usage page to see which side accounts for most of their consumption, rather than waiting until December to adapt.

The exact date and the per-plan amounts have not been announced

This guidance gives no specific launch date in December and no token amounts for each subscription tier, and other tiers are not among those named. Sharing an allowance is not the same as increasing or decreasing it, and until the details appear, there is no way to judge which tier offers better value. The steady course is to wait for OpenAI to publish the date and the per-plan figures, compare them with your own usage, and then decide whether to upgrade. For now, the most useful step is to find out how much you actually consume on the chat side and on the Codex side.
