Is an AI Kids Smartwatch Worth Buying? Location and Calls Are Essential, AI Answers Are Not

Whether an AI kids smartwatch is worth buying comes down to two things: location tracking and calls are parents' real needs, while AI answers and photo storytelling are extras. Get the essentials right before weighing the extras, or you will easily overpay for flashy features.

Where the real value lies

Location is the core selling point: whether it can track the school run accurately and alert you when your child enters or leaves a safe zone decides whether the watch is worth buying at all. Next come two-way calls and one-touch SOS: a child who can reach a parent immediately when something happens matters more than any other feature. Water resistance and battery life are threshold items: a watch without everyday water resistance that needs charging every day will be rejected by its owner within two weeks.

Work out the hurdles first

First, the SIM card and plan: a kids watch needs its own SIM, and the monthly fee and data are ongoing costs, so ask before buying whether an existing family secondary card works. Second, the parent app setup and permissions: the contact whitelist, class-time disable periods, and unknown-call blocking all need to be set by hand, since defaults tend to be loose. Third, charging habits: children forgetting to charge is normal, and a watch rated for two days that really lasts a day and a half is most likely to die at the critical moment.

Who it suits, and where it falls short

It suits lower primary school children who are starting to travel to school alone, and families where grandparents cannot always pick up and drop off and need to stay in touch. Children in junior high and above mostly already use phones, making a watch redundant. Three things are not worth it: AI answer quality varies, and homework questions may be answered directly, which does not help a child think; location drifts indoors and in underground car parks, so do not treat it as a perfectly reliable tracker; and children outgrow devices fast, so a watch may sit idle within two or three years, meaning a high-end model is effectively an early idle tax.

When choosing, check in this order: location accuracy and safe-zone alerts, call clarity and the whitelist, class-time disabling, water resistance rating, and real-world battery life, and only then look at AI features and watch faces. If any essential item fails, do not buy it no matter how attractive the AI selling point is.
