Debug Prompts for Error Messages: Paste the Traceback and Code, Get the Root Cause and a Fix in One Pass

AI prompts • Admin • • 0 views

Debugging eats more development time than almost anything else: a stack trace dozens of lines long, where the last line usually describes only the symptom and the real cause hides further up the call chain. Before you go trawling through search results, copy the prompt below into any chat AI, paste in the full error output plus the relevant code, and let the AI pin down the root cause first — then hand you the smallest workable fix and steps to verify it.

When to use it: the program won't start, an API returns an error, a script crashes halfway through, and the message is an English stack trace or error code you can't make sense of on your own.

Copy this block first: the complete error-debugging prompt

You are a senior debugging engineer who excels at finding root causes from error messages and code snippets. Help me fix this bug following these requirements:

1. Runtime environment: [programming language and version, e.g. Python 3.12 / Node.js 20; operating system; versions of key dependencies]
2. Original error: [paste the complete stack trace from the terminal or logs exactly as it appears — don't clip just the last line]
3. Relevant code: [paste the code the error points to, with the filename and line numbers marked]
4. What I've already tried: [list approaches that didn't work; write "nothing yet" if you haven't tried anything]
5. Answer order: state the root cause in one sentence first, then give the smallest workable fix, then the steps to verify the fix actually works
6. Honesty rule: never invent what you're unsure about — mark it [TO CONFIRM] and tell me what information is still missing

Go.

What to put in each of the 6 variables

  • Runtime environment: decides which body of knowledge the AI reasons with. The same error in Python 3.8 and 3.12 can have completely different root causes — a wrong version number means a wrong diagnosis.
  • Original error: always paste the full stack trace as text. The AI can't read line numbers from a screenshot, and clipping only the last line throws away the real call chain.
  • Relevant code: paste just the function or file fragment the error points to, with line numbers marked; dumping unrelated code only muddies the diagnosis.
  • What I've already tried: stops the AI from suggesting approaches you've already ruled out, saving a wasted round trip.
  • Answer order: forces the AI to state the root cause before the fix, so you don't get a "try changing this" code dump without knowing why.
  • Honesty rule: the safety catch of the whole prompt. The worst debugging failure is the AI confidently inventing a plausible-sounding answer — this requirement blocks that.

Three details that make this prompt work better

  1. Fix one bug at a time. If the output mixes two or three problems, take the stack trace that appeared first and fix it before moving on; asking about all of them together makes the diagnoses fight each other.
  2. Don't merge the fix straight away — ask "how confident are you in this root cause?" first. If the AI itself says it's unsure, run its verification steps first, or fill in the missing information and ask another round.
  3. A good diagnosis is worth keeping. Save this prompt together with your pre-filled environment template in your prompt library; next time an error hits, filling in the variables takes under a minute.
