On September 25, 2026, AI coding-agent company Cognition announced on its official blog that its annualized revenue run rate had crossed $1 billion — after disclosing $492 million in May and nearly $900 million in early September, the company has doubled its revenue marker twice in four months.
From $492M to $1B: doubled twice in four months
Annualized revenue run rate extrapolates a recent period into a full-year projection; it measures momentum, not twelve months of collected revenue. Cognition did not disclose the exact calculation behind the latest figure, but the trajectory is clear: $492 million in May, over $900 million in early September, $1 billion by the end of September. According to Bloomberg, the company closed a Series E of more than $2 billion on September 8 at a $48 billion post-money valuation — three months earlier it was valued at $26 billion.
Customers are paying for Devin
Money is coming in, and so are customers. Founded in January 2024, Cognition has had Devin generally available for less than two years, and the agent already works alongside engineering teams at GE Aerospace, Rivian, Rohlik, Exa, and others. In the announcement, the company credits this milestone to its customers and includes a 58-second customer video — teams that treat Devin as a trusted team member rather than a code-completion tool. An agent that can take on tasks, write code, and open pull requests on its own is no longer selling "faster writing," but "shipping with fewer hires."
AI coding's "$1 billion club"
Zooming out, AI coding is becoming the most crowded gold rush. Bloomberg's reporting puts Cursor's annualized revenue around $2 billion, and SpaceX completed its $60 billion acquisition of Cursor in August. As reported on this site yesterday, DeepSeek's annualized revenue also crossed $1 billion after raising prices two to four times. Within a year, the "$1 billion club" has gone from an OpenAI-and-Anthropic exclusive to an entry ticket for the likes of Devin, Cursor, and DeepSeek.
But the better the numbers look, the more the methodology matters. An annualized run rate is essentially "extrapolate the recent period to a year" — a single large enterprise deal can push it up sharply, and renewal rates, customer concentration, and recognized revenue are the real tests of the curve. That Cognition chose September to announce two milestones in a row — the funding round and the revenue mark — signals confidence in enterprise willingness to pay. But the endgame of AI coding tools will be decided by whether the code these agents write keeps enterprises renewing.
