NotebookLM's Audio Overview is obviously you can listen to it yourself, but you can't open it when you share it with others, and the most common problem is not that the audio is broken, but that the access permissions are not right. In particular, many people only share Chat-only, or only send out the chat entrance, but do not give the other party access to the entire notebook.
According to NotebookLM help, for someone to listen to the Audio Overview normally, at least one of two conditions must be met: either the notebook has been shared with the other party, or the notebook is set to an accessible public state; And the other party needs to get the permission of the "entire notebook", not just the chat-only view.
So the most practical order of inspection is:
1. Make sure the other person has access to the notebook, not just a chat.
2. See if you have turned on Chat-only. Chat-only is primarily read-only chat, which does not mean that the full Studio content is available.
3. If it's an enterprise or education account, look at one more layer, because public sharing is already restricted in some Workspace scenarios.
4. If you are in a hurry, it is usually the most trouble-free to download the Audio Overview directly and send it to the other party.
Many people will think, "I've sent out the link, why can't I do it", and here's the problem: sharing a link does not mean that the permissions are automatically complete. Audio Overview is a Studio asset in a notebook, and the access boundaries are not exactly the same as normal chat content.
Another detail that is easy to miss: if you delete the original Audio Overview, the previously generated share link may also be invalid. That is, the audio link is not a permanent backlink that exists completely separate from the original notebook.
If your goal is to have others listen steadily rather than collaborate together, downloading and sending is usually the most reliable. If your goal is to allow the other person to continue to ask questions and view Studio content in the notebook, then you should share the entire notebook directly, not just Chat-only.
So NotebookLM's Audio Overview sharing failed, don't doubt the generation quality. Most of the time, the problem is the sharing hierarchy and notebook permissions, not the audio itself.
