One of the most common things in Claude is that many people think of "sharing chat" and "sharing artifact" as the same thing. In fact, the official separates the two very well. Anthropic makes it clear in Sharing and Unsharing Chats : when sharing a chat snapshot, the files that accompany the chat are not included, only the conversation content and Claude's reply can be seen. In Publishing and sharing artifacts , the official reminder is that when you share an Artifact, viewers will also gain access to the relevant attachments and files in the conversation that created the Artifact.
What is the difference between these two actions?
If you just share a chat, it's more like a snapshot. What others see is the conversation, not the original file you uploaded. But if you share an Artifact, especially one generated from a conversation with attachments, the attachment and file context may be exposed together. This is why many teams only want to share a gadget or page, but end up exposing the original material as well.
More stable handling
- Just want others to see the conclusion or process, and share chat snapshots first.
- If you have sensitive attachments such as contracts, resumes, customer profiles, financial statements, etc., don't directly share Artifacts based on them.
- To really share Artifact, start a clean conversation without sensitive files and generate a shareable version.
It's not that many people don't know how to use Claude, but they don't realize that "Artifact's sharing permission boundary" and "chat snapshot sharing boundary" are not the same thing at all. By distinguishing this point, you can basically avoid the most dangerous kind of missharing.
