If NotebookLM does not provide a reference, or if the result does not match the reference after clicking, it may not necessarily be a system failure. First, narrow down the sources of the answers to one copy, then check the citation locations for each item. Usually, you can determine whether the question comes from the source, the version of the source, or if the question itself requires the model to make an inference beyond the original.
First, distinguish which type of citation issue it is
- No citation at all: The answer may simply state that it cannot be confirmed from the source, or it may be citing an overly short source. For materials with little content, NotebookLM sometimes uses the entire document as the basis without highlighting individual fragments.
- Citations exist but seem irrelevant: Hover your mouse over the citation number to view the excerpt, then click to enter the original text. Don't just look at a sentence near the quote; definitions, conditions, or exceptions may appear before and after the paragraph.
- The cited content is outdated: web pages, regular PDFs, and most uploaded files respond with copies of the imported version. Later updates of the original file do not mean the copies in NotebookLM update synchronously.
Narrow down the source scope sequentially
- In the source list, only check the information most likely to contain the answer, temporarily excluding other sources to avoid mixing similar expressions together.
- Write the source name in the question and break down the big issue into a single fact, for example, "List the refund period and applicable conditions only according to Chapter 3 of the Product Manual."
- To distinguish between facts and inferences in the original text, it can write: "Only answer the content clearly stated in the source; If there is no evidence, it means no information was found; do not add common knowledge. ”
- For key numbers, dates, and constraints, cite each one and verify the original context, rather than judging the entire answer as credible at once.
The document version should also be checked separately
If the source is Google Drive, you can first check if the sync option appears; Other static sources, after content changes, usually need to delete old copies and re-upload them. Protected or incomplete parsing PDFs may also cause missing searchable content, in which case a copy of the text can be used instead.
When should you stop asking questions?
When narrowing down to a single source and still unable to find a clear sentence, the safest conclusion is "the current data does not provide an answer," rather than continuing to rewrite the problem until the model comes together with a seemingly complete statement. NotebookLM citations are suitable for helping to locate evidence and cannot replace original textual review of high-risk conclusions.
