The free response channels of Hermes Agent is to specify which channels will automatically reply if you don't use bot. This configuration is great for fixed small team channels, but not for casual groups because it significantly increases the probability of interruptions, token consumption, and false triggers.
How to understand its relationship with require_mention
By default, platforms like Discord and Slack usually require Hermes before starting a response. When you add a channel to free_response_channels, the channel becomes a "no-mention response zone" where all normal messages can trigger Hermes.
When is it appropriate to open
- The team has a research channel dedicated to Hermes.
- Channel members are small, and they know that bots will actively participate.
- You want to think of Hermes as an ever-present channel assistant, not a tool that appears just by name.
A more stable approach
It is recommended to only open this capability to one or two trusted channels, and keep require_mention elsewhere. If you just want to automatically enter the thread after mentioning the bot, rather than triggering the entire channel at any time, then turn on the auto_thread and don't just put the big channel in the free response list.
In a word: Free response channels are suitable for small areas of strong collaboration, not for public or noisy groups.
