If you obviously click in in ChatGPT's Project, but the first message is that once you use a custom GPT, the chat runs out of the project, which is usually not an interface pump, but OpenAI's current design. The Projects help page is straightforward: you can use custom GPT in existing project chats, but if the first message is initiated with custom GPT, the conversation will start as a GPT chat and appear outside of the project.
This rule is particularly easy to confuse people, because from the user's point of view, your action is still "start a new conversation in the project". However, the system actually distinguishes between "project chat" and "new sessions starting with custom GPTs", giving priority to the GPT's own session form.
So when you encounter this situation, don't look for any hidden button to "move back to the project", first judge your real needs:
1. If you prefer to preserve the project context and project information, send a normal message in the project first, and then use a custom GPT in the subsequent message.
2. If you need the ability to customize GPT more, then accept it as a standalone chat first, and then see if you want to manually organize the project data.
Many people mistakenly believe that the two layers of "project" and "custom GPT" capabilities should be naturally superimposed. In fact, OpenAI now only partially supports the synergy of the two, and not all entrances are fully opened. The first message is the easiest example to step on.
Another common misconception is that "custom GPT can be used for existing chats in the project" as "custom GPT can be used directly when creating a new project chat". The help documentation actually separates the two cases, the former can and the latter will run out of the project.
Therefore, most of the problems are not account abnormalities, but current product rules. If you want to stay in the project, don't let the first message become the starting point for a custom GPT.
