What is Agentic Search? Why search products are starting to shift from "give answers" to "check for you"

Agentic Search generally refers to a new generation of search methods with the ability to "find autonomously, disassemble tasks, continuously browse and organize results". The biggest difference from traditional search is that it does not just replace ten links with a summary, but the system will plan the search steps itself, turn pages continuously, cross-verify, fill in the gaps, and finally organize the results into more usable answers. So it's going to be popular lately, largely because users are starting to expect search tools to "look it up for me" rather than "give me a bunch of more entrances to see for myself".

If traditional search is good at putting candidate information in front of you, Agentic Search is more like an assistant that will do the initial research on its own. Users give it a complex problem, such as industry comparison, itinerary planning, combing out competitors, and policy search, and it will not just reply to a general summary, but will continue to search, continue reading, continue to screen, and if necessary, it will be split into multiple sub-problems to deal with separately.

This is also the boundary between it and AI Overviews, ordinary chat-style search. The latter two are more about "generating better answers on the current search results", while Agentic Search emphasizes multi-step actions. It may search for definitions, then find the official website, compare prices, check user reviews, add timelines, and finally give you a result that is more like a research memo. OpenAI's deep research and the increasingly heavy agentic capabilities in Google AI Mode are all pushing search in this direction.

Why did everyone suddenly start searching for this word? Because the real needs of users have changed. Many questions are not "tell me what", but "help me run the information". In the past, this kind of thing was either opened a dozen tabs by itself or left to assistants. Now that the model has stronger reasoning, multiple rounds of browsing, tool calls and source citation capabilities, search products will naturally be upgraded to "proxy check".

However, Agentic Search doesn't mean "it must know the latest and most accurate answers". It only makes the retrieval and sorting more active, which does not mean that the information source is natural and reliable, nor does it mean that the reasoning process must not be misjudged. Old problems such as outdated pages, broken citations, uneven site quality, and models misspelling multiple sources still exist. Therefore, a truly reliable Agentic Search usually emphasizes that the source is visible, the steps can be traced, and the results can be reviewed.

It is also not exactly the same as Deep Research. Deep Research tends to be deeper, slower, and more biased towards research report-based outputs; Agentic Search is broader in scope, from a few minutes to a longer-link study. You can think of Deep Research as one of the heavier forms.

Why should you switch from "giving answers" to "checking for you"? Because in the age of AI, link distribution itself is no longer enough. What users are really willing to stay are those products that can help him save the labor of searching, filtering, comparing, and sorting. Agentic Search is popular, not just because of the new name, but because it is redefining where to go in the matter of "searching" in everyone's mind.
