Why did Claude pass XLSX or fail? This is not a rare problem, and the official reason has been written. The Claude Help Center clearly states in Uploading files to Claude that XLSX documents cannot be uploaded by default, provided that your account has enabled Code execution and file creation.
Why do many people misjudge
Because Claude does support many document types, such as PDF, DOCX, CSV, and TXT are more common, many people naturally think that XLSX should also be able to be transferred directly. However, table files such as XLSX are tied together with analysis capabilities, and if the corresponding capabilities are not opened, it is normal for uploads to fail.
Don't reverse the order of investigation
- First, make sure that Code execution and file creation are enabled in your account.
- Then see if the document itself exceeds the limit. The official current is 30MB for a single file and a maximum of 20 files per chat.
- If it's a table with a lot of pictures or complex objects, don't expect it to read exactly as it is.
In addition, the official also reminds that non-PDF documents are mainly extracted text content by default. If you take an Excel with a lot of visual elements and ask Claude to "look at the picture and speak", it may not read completely. First distinguish whether the problem is "incapability" or "the content of the document is not suitable", which usually avoids many detours.
