Why does ChatGPT remember you after turning off chat history? Many people think that "deleting chats" is equivalent to "deleting memories", but OpenAI's official Memory FAQ makes it clear: Saved Memories and chat history are stored separately. In other words, if you delete a conversation, it doesn't mean that it has forgotten the personal information it remembered.
The most confusing place
One is Reference saved memories and the other is Reference chat history. The former is its explicitly preserved memory, while the latter is more like a reference to the context based on past chats. The official also specifically reminds that turning off saved memory will not automatically delete what has been remembered; Deleting a single chat will not delete the corresponding saved memory along with it.
The official way to deal with it more stable
- Go to Settings > Personalization > Manage memories to delete the corresponding memories.
- If you want to completely clear a memory, delete the chat that originally mentioned it.
- If you don't want to leave memories in the future, just use Temporary Chat.
So the key to this kind of question is not "why does it haunt it", but that you deleted the wrong level. Delete chat, you can only delete chat; Delete memories, you have to do it separately in memory management.
